Effect of Functional Monomers on Performances of Styrene/acrylic Emulsion Used in the preparation of Automobile Filter Paper
Several functional monomers including acrylic acid,methylene-bis-acrylamide,N-methylol acryl amide and itaconie acid were used in combination with styrene and acrylic ester in the preparation of styrene/acrylic emulsion, and the effects of the functional monomers on the performances of the emulsion used in the preparation of automobile filter paper were studied. The results showed that, when acrylic acid was used and its dosage increased in the range of 0-6%,water-resistant and strength properties of the filter paper were improved, but air permeability was decreased. With the increase of methylene-bis-acrylamide in the range of 0-3%,the strength properties of the filter paper were improved, the water-resistant property got best when the dosage was in the range of 1-2%.As a crosslinking monomer,N-methylol acrylamide was found to improve the water-resistance and strength properties of the filter paper, but it has serious effect on the viscosity of emulsion and the air permeability of filter paper. The optimal results were obtained in the dosage of 2% for N-methylol acrylamide. The use of itaconic acid in the range of 0-3% markedly improved the strength properties of the filter paper, but it had little or no effect on the water-resistant property, and the air permeability was maintained.
