Effect of Moisture Absorption on Properties of Aramid Paper

Aramid fiber paper is one of the most top-grade insulating materials,which is able to resist high temperature.It is also the important basic material in fields such as aviation,military,environmental protection,chemical industry and automobile.In this paper,the moisture absorption and desorption properties of aramid sheets were investigated.The adsorption and desorption isotherms were conducted to study the adsorption-desorption equilibria and hysteresis of moisture in aramid sheet.Mechanical and dielectrical properties of aramid sheets,as well as dimensional expansion after moisture absorption were also analyzed.The results showed that the pressing process and thickness of sheet have no significant influences on the hygroscopic property of the aramid sheet.Similar level of the water content at the equilibrium point can be ultimately reached.The sheets had good dimension stability after moisture absorption.Compared with the original sizes,the dimensional expansion of sheets in Z-direction was the biggest,and that in length-direction was the smallest.The tensile strength and dielectric property of the sheet was not much decreased.The isotherm curve and hydroscopic hysteresis ring of equilibrium moisture absorption and desorption of aramid sheet indicates the reversible of the moisture absorption and the molecular interactions between the water and aramid fiber.
