Application of Bacterial Cellulose in Nonwood Base Paper
Some Acetobacter strains produce bacterial cellulose (BC).BC is essentially a high value speciality chemical with specific applications and usages.Because of its high tensile strength and water-holding capacity,BC has been used as a raw material for producing high-fidelity acoustic speakers,high-quality paper, and diet and dessert foods. There are also plans to use it as biomedical materials, such as artificial skin, cartilage, blood vessel, etc.Commercial successful BC-based products and patents have been reported, such as acoustic speaker by Sony Corporation,Cellulon(R)and so on.In a word,it has an attractive commercial potential. The goal of this research was to improve the quality of nonwood base paper by applying bacterial cellulose as additive. The 3-dimentional reticulated structure of bacterial cellulose was observed visually by SEM.The wet pellicles of bacterial cellulose were separated into single fibers by beating and the top of the single fibers was serrated which was in favor of its fibrillation.Adding bacterial cellulose into reed pulp increased the first retention of fillings.By addition of 10 %(g/g)bacterial cellulose into reed pulp, breaking length of paper increased by 22 %,burst index by 8 % and tear index by 5 % respectively.
