Study on Preparation of Environment-friendly Soy-Based Printing Ink

In printing industry,environmental issues caused by petroleum-based printing ink,such as volatile organic compounds(VOC)emission and petroleum resources crisis,were drastically increasing.In order to deal with these problems,soy based ink,which do not require any petroleum components,was prepared from soybean by modification.Two components were contained in its vehicle: soy polymer and soy ester,in which soy polymer was prepared from soybean oil by heat-bodying to a specified viscosity and soy ester was made by transesterification of soybean oil and ethanol.These two ingredients would be made into printing ink under certain conditions: mixing temperature,heat time,and amounts of two components,which had great effect on the properties of vehicle,or even printing ink.The formulation was easily tailored to give printing ink having viscosity,tackiness,rub-off resistance,and color density properties which can meet or even exceed industry standards.Meanwhile,the performances of this ink were compared with traditional petroleum-based inks.And results show that mixing 75% soy polymer whose viscosity(diluted with oil by 1: 2)was 8~9Pa·s and 25% soy ester under the conditions that mixing temperature: 200℃,heat time: 40min could achieve the vehicle with best properties.Printing ink containing this vehicle had high color density.Furthermore,soy-based printing ink had lower VOC contents and better biodegradation peroperties than the traditional petroleum-based inks.
