Some Dynamic Evaluations of Paper Surfaces to Predict their Printability Properties
The surface is the most important part of paper or board products with respect to their print quality.Except for the papers optical properties,the conventional methods are static and can not completely predict the print quality.The reason for the weak correlation is that printing is a dynamic process,which is time-dependent.With the developments of digital and computer technology,it is possible to carry out dynamic measurements for the surface properties of the paper.As one of the printability,dusting and linting is one of the most troublesome problem associated with offset paper.In order to carry out a comprehensive and fairly realistic analysis of the linting/dusting relationship in the laboratory,STFI-Packforsk has developed three different methods.The first method,the Lint Pick Test(LPT)can be used to determine the amount of loose particles on the paper surface,i.e.the particles which are strong candidates for causing dusting/linting,and which will mainly come loose in the first printing nip.The second method,the Fiber Rising Tester(FRT)is an indirect method which can be used to identify lint candidates which can come loosen from the paper surface in one of the subsequent printing nips.In printing,the chemistry of the paper surface influences both the wetting and the absorption of printing ink or water.The method which is most widely used in studies of the surface chemistry of paper is the measurement of the contact angle.As a novel method,the dynamic contact angle (DCA)is that the angle is measured as a function of time.In this paper,some commercial newsprint was measured via these new methods.Compared with conventional test method,these novel methods are easy to operate and more reliable and correspond well with the results of press room.
