Study on Coating Pore Structure and Its Influence on Print Properties of Low Gloss Coated Paper

Many properties of coated paper can be improved by optimizing coating pore structure.Mercury intrusion porosimetry has been proven to be a valuable technique for characterizing the pore structure. In this paper, coating pore structure of low gloss coated paper has been analyzed using mercury intrusion porosimetry. The relationships between coating structure and print performance were investigated. The results showed that different pigment blends and calendering conditions can result in various coating pore structure.PCC can enhance the pore volume, but the average pore diameter is not influenced when PCC and GCC have similar size distribution.Coarse GCC can increase average pore diameter significantly, but pore volume and porosity decrease. Also, coating pore structure affects optical properties and printability of low gloss coated paper.Brightness strongly depends on the pore diameter of coating structure, coatings with relatively large pore size can enhance light scatter and opacity. When pore size varies from 350nm to 650nm,brightness increases 0.8 units.Print gloss and delta gloss are improvable by an appropriate balance between pore size and pore volume.Increasing average pore diameter and decreasing pore volume can enhance print gloss and delta gloss.
