Study on Surface Modification of Nanosized CaCO3 and Its Application in Improving the Properties of Pigment Coated Paper

Surface modification of nanosized CaCO3 with zircoaluminate coupling agent and palmitic acid was carried out.The surface structure of prepared samples was characterized by XRD,FTIR and TEM techniques.XRD confirmed that modified nanosized CaCO3 samples kept the same bulk structure as unmodified one.According to the spectra of FTIR,it was inferred that chemical binding and physical adsorption between surface modifiers and nanosized CaCO3happened during the modification reaction.A comparative study on the effect of modified nanosized CaCO3,unmodified nanosized CaCO3 and microsized CaCO3 on the properties of pigment coated paper was made. The results showed that unmodified nanosized CaCO3 replacing microsized CaCO3 in paper coatings contributed little to physical properties of coated paper except for improving its surface strength. It was also inferred that surface modification process had profound effect on the application of nanosized CaCO3 in coated paper. The properties of coated paper including surface strength, roughness, paper gloss, and ink absorption can be improved when the surface modified nanosized CaCO3 was added into paper coatings. In addition, the experimental results proved that with the increased use of modified nanosized CaCO3 in coated paper, the main properties of coated paper can be persistently ameliorated.
