Micro-Processing Effects of Low Temperature Plasma on Viscosity of Kaolin Pigment
The cold plasma treatment represents an efficient, clean and economic process,it is known as a powerful process used to modify surface characteristics of materials without affecting the bulk properties. The present paper was designed to address current views regarding the possibility of using plasma treatment as a choice to modify kaolin clay.In this paper, three gases-air,nitrogen and argon were chose to treat kaolin particles as plasma species. The XPS(X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy)test indicated that different compound state of kaolins surface element occurred, and surface energy of kaolin particles showed a substantial decrease after gas plasma colliding. It was found that unconventional reaction between anionic dispersant and kaolin surface was created by plasma treatment.Air and nitrogen combined with chemical reagent successfully modified the surface of kaolin particles under certain process variables, accordingly decreased viscosity of kaolin slurries were achieved.
