The Effect of Pigment and Water Retention Modifier on Coating Color Rheology

All the components of the coating color can have some effects on its rheologicai properties. The object of this work was to investigate the rheological properties of four kinds of clay pigment using capillary ultra-high shear viscometer. How these clays and water retention modifier(CMC)affected the rheological property of coating color, were demonstrated by a combination of low shear viscosity and high shear viscosity. The results showed a very wide range of difference for the different coating formulations, which were tested at the same solid content and temperature. If the clay slurries have better rheological properties, the relevant coating color will also show better rheological properties.CMC is also a vital element in the coating formulation, and it can give coating formulation good shear thinning property which is beneficial to practical application. The variety and dosage of the CMC in the formulation can affect low shear viscosity and high shear viscosity of the coating color. It was found that there is not much correlation between low shear viscosity and high shear viscosity.
