How to Control the Flow Behavior of Coating Color for Coated Whiteboard
The flow behavior of coating color plays an important role in the production process of coated paper and paperboard.Improving the flow behavior of pigment slurries leads to better high speed runnability and coverage and less blade trace. The steady shear flow of coated whiteboard pigment slurries has been achieved in the laboratory by adding plastic pigment, smaller particle size latex, and water-soluble CMC(Carboxymethyl Cellulose),and optimum dosage of dispersant and adjusting the pH value of coating formulation. The experimental results show that when adding less than 1.5 parts CMC into the top layer coating, more remarkable shear-thinning flow occurred even if under low shear range(0.1~398.141s-1).Smaller particle size latex substituting for average latex gave a lower apparent viscosity of approximate 25mPa.s at 104s-1,and no dilatant flow observed in the log-log plot of apparent viscosity vs.shear rate.Neutral plastic pigment replacing equivalent plate-like kaolin led to shear-dependent flow analogous to smaller particle size latex. Moreover, optimum levels of dispersant dosage from 0.2 to 0.3 parts and of pH value between 8.5~9.0 are usually adopted to improve the steady shear flow of coating colors and to avoid shear-thickening flow at high shear rate.
