Impact of HYP Substitution on the Effectiveness of FWAs in Fine Paper Production
In recent years, hardwood high yield pulp(HYP)has found increased applications in many value-added paper grades due to its unique properties and lower cost. However, there remains a concern regarding the negative effect of the yellow shade of HYP.In this study, fluorescent whitening agent(FWA)was used to offset the decreased optical properties associated with the application of HYP.Some important factors on the effectiveness and efficiency of FWAs during fine paper production were investigated. Results show that the FWA effectiveness decreased with the increase in HYP substitution rate. The low HYP brightness also had negative effect on the FWA performance. Results of fluorescent microscopy show that the lower FWA retention on HYP pulp fiber(than BKP pulp fiber)is mainly due to the properties of HYP fibers, although anionic trash and fines in HYP also decrease the FWA retention to some extent.
