Activation of Attapulgite and Retention Properties of the CPAM/Attapulgite System
According to its special structure and properties,attapulgite(ATT)has been widely used.The raw ore of ATT contains a considerable proportion of symbiotic impurities.To improve ATT clay quality or meet the needs of industry,it must be pre-treated and activated prior to use.In this paper,acid activation,organic activation,roasting activation and microwave activation method were used to activate purified samples.FT-IR(fourier transformed infrared spectrometry)and TEM(transmission electron microscope)were used to characterize ATT before and after activation.The properties of the microparticle retention system containing ATT activated by various methods and cationic polyacrylamide(CPAM)were studied.The results showed that physical and chemical characteristics of ATT changed after activation.There was large difference on aggregate state and external appearance among ATTs before and after purification,roasting,microwave,acid and organic modification.Activation could improve dispersibility of ATT particles.ATT unactivated was not effective when added into pulp suspension as microparticle combined with CPAM.Most of ATT activated by various methods could improve retention,and ATT modified by acid activation and microwave activation had better property.FPR(first pass retention)was 93.51% by using ATT after acid modified at 1 mol/L of H2SO4 and for 1h.FPR was 92.46% by using ATT after microwave modified at medium power and for 4min.
