Modification of Nanometer Titanium Dioxide and Its Application as Part of Novel Retention Systems

Various retention systems have been developed and widely accepted in the past decades. In this work, the synthesis, characterization, and evaluation of surface-modified cationic titanium dioxide nanoparticles as part of retention systems were investigated.Quaternary amine groups were introduced onto the nanoTiO2 surface using a kind of cationic type aluminium zirconium organic metal coupling agent (CA).The particle size distribution showed better dispersion of nano TiO2 atter modification, and the diameter of the modified nano TiO2 was determined by laser particle size analyzer. To characterize the surface properties of the modified nano TiO2 particles,ζ potential and charge density were determined. In addition, the retention of old newsprint pulp was induced by the modified nano TiO2 particles in conjunction with anionic polyacrylamide. The retention effect was investigated by dynamic flocculation experiments, and the mechanisms of this nanoparticles/polymer retention system were also discussed.
