Preparation and Application of Hyperbranched Polymer as Retention Agent in Bleached Wheat Straw Pulp

A new hyperbranched polymer was synthesized by a one-step reaction of pentaerythritol(as the central core)with dimethylolpropionic acid(DMPA).Then the hyperbranched polymer was modified with maleic anhydride. The properties of the polymer were characterized with infrared spectroscopy and gel permeation chromatography. The application of the modified polymer in bleached wheat straw pulp with a cationic polyacylamide emulsion (CPAM)was also studied. The main factors, such as the ratio of the center core to DMPA,the ratio of CPAM to the polymer, the dosage of the CPAM,the stirring speed, the pH of the bleached wheat straw pulp, and the retention time after adding the polymer were discussed in detail. The optimum conditions for the application of the modified polymer in bleached pulp were finally obtained as follows:ratio of the central core to DMPA 1:10,dosage of CPAM 0.05%relative to dry fiber, ratio of CPAM to the modified polymer 1:3,reation time 1 minute after adding the modified polymer, and stirring speed 650r/min.The results showed that this system exhibited good performance and could satisfy the demand of papermaking in acidic and neutral conditions.
