Polymerization of Cationic Polyacrylate and its Performances as Paper Strengthening Agent
The paper strengthening agents of CSA-4 and CSA-15 based on styrene, acrylate, cationic substance and other chemicals were synthesized by means of emulsion polymerization.Properties of the strengthening agents and the physical performance of paper were characterized with particle size, particle polydispersity,Zeta potential, charge titration and other paper testing equipment. It was found that CSA-4 has higher cationic degree and zeta potential, lower particle size and polydispersity than CSA-15 since CSA-4 has higher cationic monomer ratios in polymerization and these also induced CSA-4 showed the excellent effects in folding endurance and tensile strength enhancement. The optimization dosage of CSA-4 was 0.5% based on moisture-free pulp. But CSA-4 was difficult to be absorbed on the fiber surface because of its weak positive charge and zeta potential,so the retention aids were needed in the papermaking process.
