Preparation and Application of Chitosan-AM-DMC Grafted Copolymer

The graft copolymerization of acrylamide(AM)and methyl acryloyl oxyethyi trimethyl ammonium chloride (DMC)onto chitosan initiated by potassium persulfate(KPS)was studied. The percentage of grafting(%G)was around 150%with the grafting efficiency(%E)of around 30%.The IR spectra of the unmodified chitosan and the grafted copolymer were determined to verify the chitosan-AM-DMC copolymer. The grafted copolymer was used as the dry-strengthening agent for wheat straw pulp. The experimental results showed that the optimum synthesis conditions of graft copolymerizing were as follows: reaction temperature of 55℃,reaction time of 4h,dripping time of monomer of 30min,the concentration of KPS of 4mmol.L-1,m(CS ): m(AM): m(DMC)=1:6:2,the concentration of NaHSO3 of 1mmolL-1.The breaking length and burst index of the handsheets increased by 22.4% and 23.4% respectively with 1.0% dosage of the grafted copolymer. The strengthening effect of the copolymer was much better than the unmodified chitosan. Finally the dry-strengthening mechanism of chitosan-AM-DMC was studied by comparing the SEM results of the rupture section of handsheets treated with or without chitosan-AM-DMC copolymer.
