Synthesis of Quaternary Ammonium Salt of Chitosan and Its Strengthen Effect on Paper

In this paper,a series of 2-Hydroxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride chitosan(HACC)with different degree of substitution(DS)were prepared by the reaction of chitosan(CTS)with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (ETA).The factors affecting on the degree of substitution of product were systematically investigated through orthogonal designs such as mol ratio of ETA with ehitosan,reaction temperature,reaction time and the content of water in system.The product which has different degree of substitution and different concentration was dissolved by water and sprayed the surface of paper.Through physical properties test,glossiness and antibacteria activity test,results shows that when the paper treated by the DS of quaternary ammonium salt of chitosan glue at 1.01 and the consistence about 0.2%maintain their origin feeling,glossiness and color.Meanwhile compared to the untreated paper,tensile strength of treated paper increased nearly 21.3%,and the folding endurance,bursting index,and tearing index was increased 27%,21%,13.2%,respectively.The HACC definitely has an inhibitory activity against S.aureus,E.coil.
