Chitosan-coated Papermaking Grade PCC Filler Prepared by Alkali Precipitation:Properties and Application
With water-insoluble chitosan and papermaking grade PCC filler as the base raw materials,chitosan-coated PCC in powder form was prepared by alkali precipitation.The coating amount,zeta potential,dissolution behavior,brightness,retention and drainage property of chitosan-coated PCC were determined,and the application of the modified filler in papermaking was investigated.The results showed that,chitosan-coated PCC was successfully prepared by alkali precipitation,and the chitosan film could be firmly and effectively coated and anchored on the surface of PCC,and there was almost no chitosan loss during the modification process.After modification,zeta potential of the filler increased,the drainage property was slightly improved,and the dissolution behavior and brightness also changed.The coated PCC was found to be quite effective in improving the tensile index of filled handsheets as compared with the uncoated PCC,and its retention property was also superior to uncoated PCC when the coating amount was relatively low.Also,chitosan-coating modification was found to have similar effects on the opacity and light scattering coefficient of filled handsheets,and the brightness of filled handsheets were somewhat negatively influenced.
