Effect of Enzymatic Treatment on the Wet-End Characteristics of Bleached Softwood Pulp

A commercial bleached softwood pulp was pre-treated with cellulase Novozym 476 or hemiceilulase Novozym HC,and then the pulp was refined with a PFI refiner. The effect of enzymatic refining on the fiber characteristics and wet-end characteristics were studied in this paper. The beating degree and paper strength of the enzymatic refined pulp were also evaluated. The results showed that enzymatic refining could increase dissolved charge of the suspension as well as the retention of CaCO3.However,enzymatic refining had little effect on the zeta potential of bleached softwood pulp.Enzymatic treatment contributed to further increase the beatability and fiber specific surface area of the pulps.Compared with the control pulp, the bleached softwood pulp treated by enzyme prior to refining had small fine content and long mean fiber length. Moreover, enzymatic treatment did not cause apparent harm to the physical strength properties of the pulp when the pulps were refined to the same beating degree.
