Study on Application and Characterization of Hemicellulosic Derivatives with Cationic Groups in Papermaking
In the current trend of a complex and more effective utilization of biomass and developments of environmentally friendly industrial processes,increasing research activities have been directed to the exploitation of the hemicelluloses of economically important plants and plant residues.The structural features of hemicelluloses depend on the botanic source and the isolation and purification procedures as well.However,contrary to cellulose,hemicelluloses are branched,amorphic polymers with considerable solubility in polar solvent systems.To enhance the solubility and their large structural variety,it is necessary for hemicelluloses to be chemically modified.Water-soluble hemicellulosic derivatives containing quarternary ammonium groups of different degree of substitution were prepared by reacting hemicelluloses isolated from sugarcane bagasse with 2,3-epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride(ETA)in aqueous-alkaline solution.The degree of substitution was determined by elemental analysis.The DS values of the derivatives could be controlled by adjusting the conditions of the quarternization.The structure of the cationic hemicellulosic derivatives was confirmed by means of FT-IR and 13C-NMR spectroscopies.The molecular weight of products prepared in ethanol/sodium hydroxide/water medium was monitored by GPC.At last,hemicellulosic derivatives used as wet-end additives in papermaking were investigated in brief.Even if the utilization of these bemicellulosic derivatives will not cost less than cationic starch or other cationic polymers,it might represent an important strategy for sustainable use of hemicelluloses.
