Comparison of Pulp Properties from ASAM,Kraft and ASAQ Processes of Triploid of Populus tomentosa Carr

ASAM(alkali-sulfite-anthraquinone-methanol)pulping,an alkaline sulfite process with addition of anthraquinone(AQ)and methanol, has been investigated as an alternative to the Kraft process to avoid air pollution problems and high bleaching costs. In this study,Triploid of Populus tomentosa Carr.grown in shanxi was examined for its suitability for pulping. The pulping trials were carded out using ASAM,AS-AQ(alkaline sulfite-anthraquinone)and Kraft methods. The results show that the ASAM pulps gave the best results in terms of yield, kappa numbers, brightness and viscosity;AS-AQ pulps were inferior to ASAM pulps but superior to Kraft pulps.ASAM pulps were bleached to 86.6% ISObrightness in an ECF(elemental chlorine-free)D1EpD2 bleaching.By contrast, the brightness of Kraft and ASAQ were 80.4% ISO and 84.8% ISO,respectively. It was also found that bleached ASAM pulps had higher tensile index, tear index and burst index than Kraft,AS-AQ pulps, therefore it would be suitable for the manufacture of writing and printing grades of paper, and the ASAM method was confirmed to be the most suitable pulping process for this species.
