Mechanism of Lignin Adsorption/Reprecipitation on Auto-catalyzed Ethanol Pulp Fibers Using XPS and AFM
AFM and XPS were used to reveal the lignin distribution and morphology on the fiber surface of ethanol wheat straw pulp. The results show that lignin particles completely collect on the un-washed fiber surface and become less and small in pulping process, whereas, the fiber surface is observed to be fibrillar after four-stage washing while still lignin particles. It is found that lignin particles on the fiber surface looks like globule due to the interaction between iignin molecules.XPS analyses show there is lignin on fiber surface based on the measurement that O/C ratio is higher than the theoretical O/C ratio of cellulose and close to the theoretical O/C ratio of lignin.High kappa number suggests that the precipitation of the dissolved lignin from the pulping liquor occurs.
