Evaluation of the Flocculation Phenomena of GCC by Polymeric Retention Systems

The influence of several polyelectrolytes and microparticle retention systems and shearing rates on the flocculation of GCC fillers was examined using a real time floc size determination unit.It was shown that the molecular weight, charge density and addition rate had the significant influence on flocculation phenomena of GCC.Higher dosage of cationic PAM increased floc size of GCC.The size of GCC flocs formed with cationic PAM decreased significantly when they were exposed to high shear rate and did not show reflocculating tendency when the shearing condition reduced to low rate.On the other hand,PEI gave low flocculating tendency and showed strong reflocculating effect when the shear condition decreased to lower rate.It was verified that microparticle or dual retention system gave strong reflocculating tendency and shear resistance of GCC floes under high turbulent condition.
