Adsorption of Pitch and Model Components onto Carboxy Methyl Dextran

The direct adsorption of pitch and model component particles onto pulp fibres was investigated as a pitch control strategy. The dynamics of adsorption and desorption of concentration pulses of colloidal pitch, abietic acid and oleic acid on carboxy methyl dextran was followed at the solid-liquid interface in real time by surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy(SPR).Oleic acid retains both on polysaccharide and on oleic acid covered surfaces.Abietic acid does not.Pitch adsorption behaviour on CMD is halfway between that of abietic acid and oleic acid.Pitch retention might be affected by its oleic acid/fatty acid surface concentration. The pitch adsorption and retention behaviour onto polysaccharide is a strong function of its chemical composition and the hydrodynamic conditions.
