ZDDP ANTIWEAR ADDITIVE-MOTOR BASE OIL BLEND AND TRIBOCHARGING IN THE METAL SHAFT-OIL-LIP SEAL INTERFACIAL SYSTEM

Tribocharging in a rotating shaftmotor base oil-lip seal system has been identified as one of the phenomena that can affect the work of the system and be some cause for an increase in the braking torque of a rotating shaft 1,2. This paper presents the results of experiments on tribocharging of the blends of mineral and synthetic motor base oils and ZDDP (zinc dialkyldithiophosphate) for different ZDDP contents. Experiments have been performed in a specially built test stand whose essential part is a simplified model of an engine crankcase (sump). The system: rotating shaft-oil-lip seal constitutes a friction junction where a metal shaft rotates at given various angular velocities. The junction is similar to that in each motor car, namely a crankshaft, a sump (crankcase), and a seal. The results obtained show some dependences of the electric potential induced in a stiffening ring of a rotary lip seal on the shafts angular velocity and on the oil temperature. In general the ZDDP content causes tribocharging of the blend of base oils and ZDDP to be increased, but there is a critical value of the ZDDP contents above which the tribocharging process decreases.
