Combination of Non-thermal Plasma and Heterogeneous Catalysis for Removal of Low-concentration Benzene Hydrocarbons in Indoor Air
The benzene hydrocarbons conversion,COx yield and O3 emission by the combination of non-thermal plasma (NTP)and Pt/Al2O3 or Mn/Al2O3 catalyst were investigated in a link tooth wheel-cylinder plasma reactor. The results show that the order of benzene hydrocarbons conversion is p-xylene>toluene>benzene under the same reaction conditions.Matching a Pt/Al2O3 or Mn/Al2O3 catalyst bed behind the discharge region promotes the conversion of benzene hydrocarbons and decreases the applied voltage to obtain the same conversion. The presence of Pt/Al2O3 or Mn/AL2O3 catalyst also results in a decrease of CO yield and O3 emission. The maximum CO concentration decreased from 17 mg/m3 for NTP alone to 7 mg/m3 for the combination of NTP and Mn/Al2O3 catalyst while the largest O3 emission decreased from 707 mg/m3 to 39 mg/m3.
