SELF-PULSING PHENOMENON IN HOLLOW CATHODE DISCHARGE

The self-pulsing phenomenon of hollow cathode discharge(HCD)in argon iS reported in this paper.The HCD plasma is generated in a semi-cylindrical hole.The current-voltage(Ⅰ-Ⅴ)characteristics and the time evolution of the current and voltage of HCD are measured under different conditions.It is found that the self-pulsing can be observed under wide-ranged operating conditions,in both the negative and the positive difierential resistance regions Of HCD.The pulse frequency increases with the averaged current,while the rise time and duration of the pulse do not depend on the current.The self-pulsing is related to the hollow cathode effect or the non-uniform discharge in hollow cathode.
