Mobility Prediction Based Multi-hop Vehicular Wireless Ad Hoc Networks for QoS Support
Some new applications make it possible to improve the comfort and productivity of passengers in car. In vehicular ad hoc networks, however, due to frequent topology change caused by vehicles’ high mobility, QoS support of these applications is an essential problem. Significant amount of time is spent in repairing or reconstructing data transmission session for frequent path disruptions. This paper proposed a data session flow handoff scheme based on vehicles’ specific mobility characteristics. In spite of the dynamic mobility, the motion of vehicles is quite predictable compared to other mobility patterns for wireless ad hoc networks, with motion information (e.g., velocity, direction, position) readily available. Through successfully predicting a possible link breakage prior to its occurrence, the scheme can ensure to keep a more stable communication. The performance of the scheme is evaluated through computer simulations. Simulation results show the effectiveness of our proposed scheme under highway scenario in terms of increasing data session duration, reducing the number of path breakage events and increasing the end-to-end packet delivery ratio.
