Integrated Forest Biorefinery:Concept and Processes
The pulp and paper industry is in a unique position to be evolved into Integrated Forest Biorefinery (IFBR)that produces high value-added products such as ethanol, polymers, special chemicals,in addition to the conventional pulp and paper products. This paper reviews a number of pathways to produce cellulosic ethanol from biomass, with a focus on the prehydrolysis Kraft dissolving pulp production process. In the process, hemicellulose is extracted from wood chips and the hemicellulose-depleted wood chips are subjected to the kraft pulping process.A full utilization of hemicellulose is an important step of the IFBR concept.Hemicellulose in the pre-hydrolysate will first be separated/concentrated/purified,subsequently it will be further processed chemically/enzymatically to produce value-added products such as ethanol, furfural, lactic acid, xylitol, etc.
