Solidification and stabilization of sulfide-rich mine railings using lime-fly ash binders
A preliminary experimental phase was conducted to test lime-fly ash binders in solidifying and stabilizing sulfide-rich tailings from two mines in Canada. Treated tailings samples were subjected to chemical and mineralogical characterization tests. Metal and sulfate leachability from the stabilized samples was assessed using the acetate-based TCLP test and deionized water. Results show that ettringite and other secondary minerals are responsible for solidifying the samples. Although these minerals are not well defined yet, results indicate the capability of lime-fly ash binders in immobilizing heavy metals in mine tailings and providing a solid product of appreciable mechanical strength.
