Efficient transition from open-pit to underground mining:a case study
The Yanqianshan iron ore mine has been mined by open-pit and is now being designed for underground mining. The open-pit is some 220m in depth and there is more than 34 million tons of ore outside the pit near the pit wall. The main issue to be addressed is to safely recover the ore near the pit wall and gain high production rate from underground mining. A deign was worked out that has an annual capacity of 630million tons and requires 9 years to reach this capacity. Due to the high demand of iron ore in China, higher production capacity and short transition time are desired. The authors conducted a thorough investigation and proposed a preliminary design that can reach an annual capacity of 12-25 million tons and shorten the transition time to 6 years. The main features of the design are presented in this paper.
