Equipment Selection at Tenke Fungurume Mining

A proof of concept study was performed to verify the mine equipment selection for the TenkeFungurume Mine (TFM) in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).The complex geologic formations and high metal content of this world class sedimentary hosted copper deposit create a challenging mining environment where ore fragmentation is critical in achieving a high degree of selectivity.Because selectivity is a key driver,a continuous surface miner was selected to provide the primary fragmentation of the ore.Operating data was collected under a variety of field conditions to formulate and verify the effectiveness of achieving selectivity as well as the production rates required by the mine plan. All primary and support equipment were sized to complement pit geometry and production rates achieved by the surface miner. The primary productivity and quality performance measures for the study include particle size distribution, ground engaging tool (GET) wear rate, fuel consumption and cost per tonne. Productivity rates are within acceptable levels of projected tonnes per operating hour while cost per tonne is competitive with conventional drilling and blasting.TFM is conducting a particle size distribution study and early indications are that the surface miner will provide direct feed to the SAG mill with 80 percent of the ore at minus 5 cm thus eliminating the need for a primary crusher. With the performance results indicating that the surface miner will meet TFM productivity, quality and selectivity objectives,TFM has purchased a second unit for mine operations with a third unit to be delivered in the first quarter of 2009.Continued monitoring of productivity, particle size distribution and cost per tonne will be ongoing as the surface miner advances through the pre-production phase.
