Real-time analysis of mineral raw material for extraction and drilling mining processes applying LIBS technology

The technique of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) will be integrated into a real-time analysis system for recognizing dust and cut material in mining operations applied as a compact analyzer. The system is able to delivers qualitative as well as quantitative information about a detected material of interest. Utilizing the obtained information the ranging arms of a shearer loader in underground hard coal mining should be controlled automatically in dependence of the material type. Furthermore the technology will be integrated in a drilling rig where it enables real-time modeling and exploration of quarry deposits. The innovative application of LIBS provides a non contact continuous quality control of recovered material. It leads to lower waste rock mining and a higher recovery while additionally wear of cutting and conveying equipment is decreased. A key challenge of the project is the development of a laser system which is suitable for the application in harsh mining environments affected by dust, shocks and vibrations.
