The Terex(R)SHM(R) Highwall Mining System increasing extractable coal reserves
Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (buildings, rivers etc.).Coal is mined from visible, horizontal,or near horizontal, coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit positioned outside the drive,in front of the highwall. The Terex(R)SHM(R) Highwall Miner is a very economic way of extracting coal that would normally be sterilised. This is done by using a set of enclosed pushbeams which push the cutterhead into the coal seam. They also convey the coal with a screw conveying system from the cutterhead to the back of the base machine. The determination of the minimum coal pillar width,as well as the quantity of coal that is required as support in the hanging wall and foot wall,is very important. This determines the profitability of the highwall mining operations.
