The Application of RS and GIS to Environmental Monitoring-A Case Study in Shenfu Coal Mine Site
Shenfu coal mine site is a typical Chinese coal mining area with enormous environmental problem, located in Loess Plateau. The goal of this paper is to carry out the monitoring of coal mining environment,by the application of remote sensing (RS) and geography information system (GIS). Briefly speaking, vegetation coverage, watershed system, precipitation, land use, slope steepness, soil erosion, desertification and coal mine distribution are extracted as the main eight monitoring factors. The integrated application of RS and GIS plays an important role in the entire monitoring process. As a result, eight maps of different environmental factors are composed with particular monitoring information, which act as the basic data and support for further environmental assessment and restoration project.
