A new method improving intergranular corrosion resistance of AISI 304 stainless steel: deep cryogenic treatment

The present remedies used to reduce sensitization in austenitic stainless steels have certain advantages and disadvantages, such as reducing C content, addition of Ti element or niobium plus tantalum, postweld heat treatment and grain boundary engineering (GBE) etc. In this study,a new method improving intergranular corrosion resistance of AISI 304 stainless steel by deep cryogenic treatment has been developed. Martensite transformation, plastic deformation and grain refinement during deep cryogenic treatment and the subsequent sensitization treatment, which provide more carbides precipitate sites and change the character of original austenitic grain boundary network by twin nucleation and growth. Deep cryogenic treatment should be carried out before the exposure to elevated temperature in order to gain better intergranular corrosion resistance. Deep cryogenic treatment is a very effective and practical method, which can be used for special conditions, such as pre-strain forbidden components, very thick wall components and welded components etc.
