High-temperature fracture behavior of ceramic matrix composites: an overview

A description of material design, microstructure and mechanical properties of continuous fiber-reinforced ceramic composites, including high-modulus carbon fiber composites,is presented in order to explain their toughness and their potentialities for application in advanced technological solutions that demand highly tailorable materials to withstand ultrahigh temperatures, high thermal gradients and other severe conditions. Standardization activities on test methods for ceramic composites, their reinforcements and interracial properties, are also reported.
