Preparation and Characterization of Palygorskite/γ-Fe2O3/C Nanocomposite Materials

As natural nanomaterial, palygorskite is rich in reserve and low in price which leading to huge development potential in the environmental protection research. The palygorskite/γ-Fe2O3/C nanometer composite material acting as magnetic adsorbent was prepared using palygorskite and spent bleaching earth as fundamental raw material through the process of ferreous hydrolysis, decomposition and carbonization of organic matter in spent bleaching earth residue under controlling atmosphere during calcinations. There is strong γ-Fe2O3 diffraction peak in the XRD patterns of composite material. Magnetic susceptibility analysis showed that the composite material has a good magnetic performance for electric magnetic extraction.TEM images show that γ-Fe2O3 particles were loaded onto the palygorskite crystal surface and nano-particle diameter is about 10-60nm.Carbon was loaded as amorphous onto the palygorskite crystal surface according to TEM investigation and the carbon amount in the composite percentage is 7.4% according to chemical analyses. The IR pattern of the composite show that there are function groups of C-H and -C=O on the surface of palygorskite/γ-Fe2O3/C and the phenol removal efficiency of composite material is beuer than palygorskite.Magnetic extracted and organicphile absorbent based clay was obtained.
