Performance of the Stormwater Wetland for Non-point Pollution Control

In order to evaluate the performance of the storm water wetland for non-point pollution control,awetland with an area of 0.23 ha was constructed and operated since January 2006.This is the first research site inKorea established by the Government (ministry of environment)to study on the control of pollutants instormwater.The wetland receives water from the watershed of 22ha agricultural and forested watershed,duringbase flow and storm flow conditions.The wetland is planted with common reeds in the low marsh and cattails in the high marsh with a hydraulic retention time of 24 hrs.The wetland consists of the flow regulation and by-pass structrue followed by forbay,pilot channel,low marsh and high marsh,and micropool.This research has been conducted for 12 rainfall events in two years.Diffcrcnt conditions such as dry day,rainfall depth,rainfall intensity were examined and analysis was done for TSS,COD,TN and TP.The range for the removal efficiencies for TSS,COD,TN and TP were 53~98%,25.4~93.5%,-86.1~80.4%and 12.7~94.9%,respectively.The vast differences in the removal efficiencies are mainly due to the comprehensive effects of rainfall,characteristics of the land use and growing plants.Through the close analysis of the removal efficiencies,we can predict that as there is big rainfall event then the removal efficiencies are low due to the high hydraulic load and vice versa.All pollutant removal effciencies showed dependence on the rainfall events.TSS,COD and TP showed relatively stable removal efficiencies during the entire operational period,which can be seen from the low standard deviation values of removal efficiency.The removal efficiencies are high for these parameters because the storm water contains large amount of particulate matter.
