Efficient and Sustainable Energy Generation from Biomass
Worldwide the energy demand and prices for fossil fuels are rising significantly. In addition,CO2-emissions from energy generation contribute to global warming.Renewable energies such as biomass could provide a solution to these problems. But are also dealing with some disadvantages.Energy crops are believed to lcad to scarcilty and high prices of food, and for palmoil-and sugarcane-plantations rain folrests are being cleared which even worsens the global CO2-balance.For these reasons biomass should be produced and handled sustainably, most efficient conversion technologies have to be applied, and especially residual cellulosic biomass should be used. This paper gives a background on global energy generation and consumption and shows potentials for energy generation from renewables.Different conversion technologies are briefly being introduced.Specific emphasis is put on biogas technologies(fermentation processes),on gasification of e.g.wood,and on the producion of biotfuels such as bio-diesel, bio-ethanol and BTL (biomass to liquids). It is shown how biomass production can be harmful to the environment and how it can be beneficial.Furlhermore also some outlooks into the futitre are given.
