Introduction of Test Pilot Best Management Practices for Reducing Non-point Pollution in Korea
The use of various types of structural BMPs for treating stormwater runoffis presented in this paper. All together,11 BMPs based on natural systems were constructed in the watershed on the tributaries of Han River.Types of BMPs constructed were grassed waterway, wet swale, wetland, vegetative filter stripe and infiltration trench and infiltration basin which receive lalnoff water during rainfall events. These BMP varies in size from 0.5-27.6 ha.Some structural BMPs use on-line treatment whereas other uses off-line treatment for runeffwater. They receive stormwater from different land uses including residential, commercial, highway and open areas. The performance of these BMPs was regulated bv different lactors such as incoming pollutants concentration, rainlal pattem, time of year, maintenance frequency and many other factors. The removal performances from all 11 BMPs were reviewed. The observed pollutant removal efficiencies were variable depending on type of BMPs but generally showed moderate removal efficiency for TSS.COD and TP These parameters were more stable because of the particle associated with it.TN,ammonia, and nitrate showed variable results because of its complexity.Also.the concentration of inflow runoff water is widely affected by the use of fertilizers in the farmland due to farmers.Moreover.monitoring was done on different seasons (dry and wet)which also affect the performance of the particular typc of BMP.Furthermore, this paper also reviews the economical cost for operation and maintenance of different types of BMPs.
