The Existence and Impact of Presenteeism in Work Place an Empirical Study
This paper describes an attempt to empirically investigate the existence of presenteeism-a term defined as employees keep coming to work while sick. This phenomenon has been observed in the work environment extensively with few(if any)answers addressed in available literature as to why employees go to work even when they are sick, distracted or stressed to be productive, risk of further damage to their health. The Presenteeism is different from the absenteeism-which has been explored and addressed in published researches, that it covers more than practical issues, but also presents an economical burden for employers in terms of additional high indirect costs that are not perceived by the employees as a cost. A unique questionnaire was developed in this research based on key critical questions needing answers. The questionnaire was placed on the Internet and all data for this research were then collected from online participants all over the country. The results of this research will be discussed with statistical displays along with managerial socio-economic implications and suggestions for future research.
