Statistics of the contact network in dense granular matter
We investigate the distribution of contact forces in a static granular system and annular shear granular flow,based on discrete element method.The influences of packing fraction and friction coefficient are also considered.From the results,we find that a critical packing fractionγc exists in two kinds systems.If the packing fractionγ<γc,all contact forces in granular system vanish.For the shear granular flow,the critical packing fraction is significantly smaller than that of the static granular system.The distribution of the contact forces P(F)also exhibits different distributing form,especially at lower packing fraction.Furthermore,we investigate the anisotroW of contact network using the angular distribution of the contact forces,especially inside sheared region near shearing boundary.In static granular system,contact force network is approximately isotropic.However,m shear granular flow,it exhibits a distinct anisotropy along the shear direction.
