THE METHOD AND APPLICATION OF GRAPHICS COMPUTATIONAL MECHANICS IN DEM

Rock mass has extremely complex characteristics in engineering. These characteristics include all the mechanical properties of solid materials. Whether the finite element method taking rock as a continuous medium or the method taking it as a non-continuous medium, such as the discrete element method, block theory, DDA, manifold and so on, they are all to get the result from numerical calculation and then present them in a graphical manner. Here, the concept and method of graphics computational mechanics, first proposed in this article, integrates computational mechanics, computer graphics and modem CAD technology. By making use of the mature theory and method of computer graphics and 3D modeling platform supported by modem CAD technology, the rock will be cut into combination entities of a certain direction, a certain size, a certain shape and features, which simulates a real rock level, joints, weak dissection, the fracture zone and other geological features. Its direct use of sub-entities block in the structure of the slip joint surface, releasing, the rotations and other deformation graphics, analysis of discontinuous deformation characteristics, such main features of the graphical entities, attributes, mutual contacts, the embedded location and its extent can be directly judged or calculated from the graphics. And then it can be applied to a variety of numerical methods. Compared with the existing methods, it is more intuitive, simple and reliable. Its combination with virtual reality technology will make the graphics computational mechanics become a whole new area of development and greater the value of its applications.
