Continuum-based Discrete Element Method and its Applications
Continuum-based discrete element method (CDEM) is a kind of numerical approach which is a combination of finite element and discrete element method. In this paper, the principle and structure of CDEM is introduced briefly, and two new mechanical models, two new calculating approaches and one new element generating technique used in CDEM are presented. Two new mechanical models are common face breakage model and block breakage model, two new calculating approaches are the method to calculate the force and displacement among different element size and the method to calculate breakage of joints after randomizing the coordinates of nodes, and the new element generating technique means generate elements by cutting a domain. Examples of application of the CDEM for solving some geo-engineering problems are given as well.
