NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE IRRADIATION-MECHANICAL BEHAVIORS OF DISPERSION NUCLEAR FUEL ELEMENTS
The metal-matrix dispersion nuclear fuel elements are widely used in the research and test nuclear reactors, which are formed by large numbers of small fuel particles and non-fissionable metal matrix. The produced thermal effects, the irradiation-induced particle swelling and the irradiation creep of the metal matrix all affect their security.A special unit cell for the simulations of the meso-strength and the thickness variation of the plate-type element is developed.Numerical results indicate that the thermal stresses hold a large fraction in the total stresses induced together by irradiation swelling and irradiation creep; the thickness variation mainly results from irradiation swelling. The effects of the irradiation creep are remarkable.
