THEORETICAL ANALYSIS OF STRESS DISTRIBUTION AND FAILURE MECHANISM IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT

A transient,two-dimensional finite element model is developed in this paper soas to predict stress and strain distribution due to material parameters. In the loadapplication procedure,a dual wheel with standard pressure was chosen.Resultsindicate that vertical compressive stress and tensile strain are reaching a considerablevalue between wheels, where fatigue initiation may start from top to bottom of thelayers.Although the vertical compressive stress is effective within all the pavementlayers, tensile strain is only effective on wearing and granular base course, which isthe main cause of fatigue related pavement failures.
