TRANSIENT THERMAL/MECHANICAL COUPLING FRACTURE OF FUNCTIONALLY GRADED MATERIALS-TEN YEARS RESEARCH ACTIVITIES IN CHINA AND AUSTRALIA
Cracking is a common phenomenon for functionally graded materials (FGMs) subjected to a mechanical and/or temperature change.Cracks in a medium may be in the form of either a single dominant crack or multiple cracks. This paper reviews the research on the thermal shock fracture of FGMs conducted in China in the past ten years.Development of analytical, and finite element/finite difference methods to obtain the solution of the transient thermal/mechanical fields in functionally graded materials (FGMs) are introduced. The thermal shock resistance behaviors of FGMs are investigated. In addition to FGMs,thermal shock fracture behaviors of thermal protection ceramic coatings are also introduced in this reviewing paper.
