CONFIGURATIONAL FORCES AND THEIR APPLICATION TO DYNAMIC FRACTURE IN THE FRAMEWORK OF THERMOMECHANICS

A unified configurational force approach applied to dynamic fracture is developed in the framework of thermomechanics.The balance equations of configurational force are established in conjunction with those of standard force and entropy to characterize the coupled motion of material particle and crack tip.The theoretical investigation shows that the negative projection of internal configurational force concentrated at crack tip in the direction of crack propagation coincides with the energy release rate whether in purely mechanical or in thermomechanical process.This result is an extension to the thermomechanics case of Gurtins finding for purely mechanical process.
