HIGH CYCLE FATIGUE PROPERTIES OF AN AA2524 ALUMINUM ALLOY IN FOUR-POINT BEND

Four-point bend fatigue tests were conducted on an AA2524 T34 Al alloy,along the rolling direction at room temperature and frequency of 15 Hz,R = 0.1,in air.It was found that the fatigue limit of the alloy was 87% of its yield strength,almost doubled that of its predecessor,an AA2024 Al alloy.Cracks were initiated predominantly at coarse particles but occasionally at grain boundaries on the surface.Crack propagation was in a crystallographic form.The coarse particles in the AA2524 Alloy were much less than those in an AA2024 alloy,which contributed significantly to the superior fatigue properties in this alloy.
